How to Create a Meme Coin on Solana: A Beginner's Guide

Want to launch your own meme coin but have never made a token before? You are in the right place. This guide walks you through the whole thing in plain English, from the idea to the moment the token lands in your wallet.

TL;DR

  • A meme coin is a token built around a joke, a meme or a shared bit of internet culture. Its value comes from its community, not from technology.
  • On Solana, a meme coin is an ordinary SPL token. You can create one in about five minutes without writing code.
  • You need a Solana wallet, a little SOL, a name, a ticker symbol and an image.
  • Most creators revoke mint and freeze authority, because holders check for it. Revoking is permanent.
  • A new token cannot be traded until someone adds liquidity on a decentralised exchange. That is a separate step.

What Is a Meme Coin?

A meme coin is a cryptocurrency that started as a joke. The first one to become widely known launched in 2013 as a parody of the crypto craze, built around a popular dog meme. Since then thousands have followed, each one riding a meme, an inside joke or a moment in internet culture.

What makes meme coins different is where their value comes from. Most tokens exist to do a job, like paying for a service or voting on decisions. A meme coin usually has no job at all. People hold it because they like the joke, enjoy the community and want to be part of it. That makes meme coins fun, but it also makes their prices very unpredictable.

Technically there is nothing special about a meme coin. On Solana it is a standard token, the same kind as any other. The Solana Foundation calls these SPL tokens, and every token on the network uses the same underlying program.

Why Do People Launch Meme Coins on Solana?

Mostly because it is cheap and quick. Every action on Solana costs a tiny network fee, usually a fraction of a cent, and transactions confirm in seconds. When a community is sending tokens back and forth all day, those low fees matter.

It is also simple. You do not need to write or deploy your own smart contract, because Solana already has a ready-made token program that every token uses. You only fill in the details. If you want the longer version, we wrote a separate guide on why Solana is a good fit for new tokens.

What Do You Need Before You Start?

Get these ready first and the rest takes minutes:

  • A Solana wallet. Any wallet that supports Solana works, usually a browser extension or a mobile app.
  • Some SOL. Creating a token on our Standard tier costs a flat 0.2 SOL. Keep a little extra on top for the network fee and the small deposit Solana keeps for storing your token's data.
  • A name and ticker symbol. The symbol is the short code people see in wallets, usually three to five capital letters.
  • A square image. This is your coin's logo. A clean PNG at 512 by 512 pixels or larger works well.
  • A short description. One or two sentences about what the coin is.

How Do You Create a Meme Coin on Solana?

Here is the full process using our no-code token creator.

Step 1: Settle the idea, name and symbol

This is the part that matters most, and it happens before you touch any tool. The best meme coins have an idea people get instantly. Ask yourself whether someone scrolling past would understand the joke in a second.

Keep the name short and easy to say. Check that the symbol is not already used by a well-known token, since that confuses people. Stay away from names, logos or characters that belong to a real company or person. Using someone else's brand can get your coin delisted or land you in legal trouble.

Step 2: Fill in the token details

Open the token creator and connect your wallet. For a meme coin, the Standard tier is all you need. The Pro tier exists for special features that most meme coins never use.

Enter your token name, symbol and description, then upload your image. What you type here is saved on the blockchain with your token, so double-check the spelling.

Step 3: Choose the supply

The supply is how many tokens will exist. Meme coins often use big round numbers like one billion. There is no right answer, but a very large supply means each token is worth a tiny fraction of a cent, which some communities like.

You will also see a field called decimals. It controls how finely the token can be split. Leave it at the default of 9 unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Step 4: Decide on authorities

This step is easy to skip, but it is the one holders care about most. Authorities are permissions that stay with the creator after the token exists:

  • Mint authority lets you create more tokens later.
  • Freeze authority lets you freeze someone's tokens so they cannot move them.
  • Update authority lets you change the token's name, symbol and image.

When a creator keeps these, holders have to trust that they will never use them. Most meme coin creators revoke mint and freeze authority so holders do not have to take their word for it. Many also make the token details permanent.

Revoking cannot be undone. Under the hood it sets the authority to nobody, so not even you can get it back. If you want to wait, you can keep them for now and revoke them later for free on our Manage Token page. Our guide on revoking mint and freeze authority explains the trade-offs in more detail.

Step 5: Add socials, review and sign

You can attach a website, a Telegram group and an X account to your token. Wallets and token pages can show these links, which makes it easier for people to find your community.

You can also choose the first or last two characters of your token's address, so it ends in something like your initials. This is optional.

When you are happy, read through everything one last time. Most of these choices are permanent. Then click Create and approve the transaction in your wallet. A few seconds later, the tokens are in your wallet.

What Happens After You Create Your Meme Coin?

Your coin now exists, but nobody else can buy it yet. Before anyone can trade it, there has to be a liquidity pool, which is a pot of your token and SOL on a decentralised exchange. Traders swap against that pool. You can create one on a decentralised exchange such as Raydium or Meteora. SoulMinter does not offer this step, because we are only a software tool for creating and managing tokens.

Then comes the part that decides whether a meme coin goes anywhere: the community. A few things that tend to help:

  • Pick one or two places to gather people, such as a Telegram group or an X account, and be active there.
  • Post regularly. Memes, artwork and honest updates keep people interested.
  • Be open about the numbers. Tell people how much supply exists, how much you hold and whether authorities are revoked.
  • Let the community join in. The best meme coins feel like a shared joke, not a product being sold.

What Mistakes Do First-Time Creators Make?

  • Typos in the name or symbol. If you made the details permanent, you cannot fix them.
  • Running out of SOL halfway through. Keep a little more than the fee in your wallet.
  • Keeping authorities without explaining why. Holders tend to assume the worst.
  • Promising profits. Telling people your coin will go up in price is misleading, and in many countries it can break the law.
  • Borrowing someone else's brand. It can get your coin removed from exchanges and websites.

Is Creating a Meme Coin Legal?

In most places, creating a token is legal. What you say about it, and how you sell it, is where the rules come in. They differ a lot from country to country. Regulators such as the U.S. SEC explain on Investor.gov that crypto assets can carry serious risks. If you plan to raise money or market the coin as an investment, check the rules where you live first.

Be honest with your community too. Meme coin prices can rise and fall sharply, and many lose most of their value. Make sure people understand that before they buy.

How to create a meme coin on Solana

Create a meme coin as a standard Solana token using a no-code creator: settle the idea, fill in the token details, choose the supply, decide on authorities, then review and sign.

  1. 01

Settle the idea, name and symbol

Pick a theme people recognise straight away, a short name, and a ticker symbol of three to five letters. Avoid names that belong to an existing brand.

  2. 02

Optionally add your website, Telegram and X links. Check every field, click Create, and approve the transaction in your wallet.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to code to create a meme coin?

No. A no-code token creator turns a simple form into the transaction for you. You fill in the name, symbol, image and supply, then approve it in your wallet.

How much does it cost to create a meme coin on Solana?

On SoulMinter the Standard tier is a flat 0.2 SOL. On top of that you pay Solana's own network fee, which is a fraction of a cent, and a small deposit the network keeps for storing your token's data. Keep a little extra SOL in your wallet to cover both.

How long does it take?

Filling in the form takes a few minutes and the transaction usually confirms within seconds. The idea, the artwork and the community take far longer than the technical part.

Can people buy my meme coin straight after I create it?

No. Your new token sits in your wallet, but nobody can trade it until a liquidity pool exists on a decentralised exchange. Setting one up is a separate step that SoulMinter does not provide.

Should I revoke mint and freeze authority on a meme coin?

Most meme coin creators do. Holders check these settings before buying, because a creator who keeps them could mint more tokens or freeze wallets. Revoking is permanent, so decide before you sign.

Can I change my meme coin's name or image later?

Only if you kept the update authority and did not make the metadata immutable. Once you give that up, the name, symbol and image are fixed for good.
