7 Practical Use Cases for SPL Tokens Beyond Meme Coins

SPL tokens can do a lot more than meme coins. Seven practical uses explained in plain language: loyalty points, tickets, voting, game coins, badges and more.

Most people first hear about Solana tokens through meme coins. Fair enough, there are a lot of them. But a token is really just a digital unit that lives in a wallet and can be sent, counted and checked by anyone. That turns out to be useful for plenty of boring, practical things.

Quick background: an SPL token is any token on Solana. They all run on one shared token program, so you don't have to write code to make one. Here are seven ways people use them.

1. Loyalty Points

Think of a coffee shop stamp card, except the stamps sit in the customer's wallet instead of a paper card that ends up in the wash.

The shop creates a token and sends a few to each customer after a purchase. Ten tokens get you a free coffee: the customer sends them back to the shop and the balance updates on its own. Nobody needs to download an app or remember a password, and a few neighbouring shops could even share the same points.

2. Members-Only Access

Some communities use a token as a key. Hold at least one and you get into a private chat, a members' page or a discount at checkout. Sell it or give it away, and your access goes with it.

The website just checks your wallet when you connect. This is usually called token-gating.

3. Community Voting

A club, a project or an online group can hand out tokens and let holders vote on decisions. One token, one vote, in the simplest version.

The nice part is transparency. When the vote happens on-chain, anyone can recount it, which leaves little room for "trust me, it passed."

4. In-Game Currency

Games have had coins and gems forever. The difference with a token is that it sits in the player's own wallet instead of only in the game company's database.

Players can earn it, spend it in the game, or send it to a friend. One word of warning: once a game coin can be traded, it may end up with a market price. Plan for that before you launch, not after.

5. Badges and Certificates

Finished a course? Went to a conference? Got through your first year as a member? A token can prove it.

For this you want a soulbound token. That means it can't be moved out of the wallet it was sent to, so nobody can buy someone else's certificate. On Solana this is the non-transferable extension, which we cover in our guide to soulbound tokens on Solana.

6. Event Tickets

Say a venue has 300 seats. The organizer creates 300 tokens and sends one to each buyer. At the door, guests approve a quick transaction that burns the ticket, meaning it's destroyed for good and can't get anyone in a second time.

Worried about scalpers? Make the tickets soulbound and they can't be passed on at all. The catch is that a guest who can't make it can't hand theirs to a friend either.

7. Digital Dollars (Stablecoins)

This is probably the biggest use of all. A stablecoin is a token meant to stay worth exactly one dollar (or one euro), backed by real money the issuer holds. Several of the most widely used dollar stablecoins are also issued as SPL tokens.

People use them to pay each other, send money across borders in seconds, or hold funds without the usual crypto price swings. Issuing your own is another matter, though. In the EU, the US and many other places it takes a license, so treat this as background knowledge rather than a weekend project.

Which One Fits Your Idea?

Most of these need nothing more than a regular SPL token. Soulbound badges and tickets need Token-2022, the newer token program with built-in extras like non-transferable and transfer fees.

A detail that catches people out: for loyalty points, game coins or tickets, you'll usually want to keep mint authority so you can create more tokens later. That's the opposite of the usual meme coin advice. Our guide on mint and freeze authority explains when to keep it and when to let go.

When you're ready, our token creator handles both standard and Token-2022 tokens, no code needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SPL token?

It is any token on the Solana blockchain. All of them run on the same shared token program, so a loyalty point, a game coin and a dollar stablecoin are built the same basic way.

Do I need to code to make a token for one of these uses?

No. A no-code token creator can make a standard SPL token or a Token-2022 token with extensions such as non-transferable or transfer fees. The app or community around the token is the part that takes real work.

Should I revoke mint authority on a utility token?

Not always. For loyalty points, game coins or tickets you usually need to keep minting new tokens over time, so you would keep mint authority. Revoking it makes more sense when the supply is meant to be fixed forever.
